🌿 Wildflowers in Bloom on the Isle of Mull

We went for a walk behind the campsite the other day and were delighted how many wildflowers are coming through just now. It’s that time of year where everything suddenly looks a bit brighter, even on a grey day.

You don’t really have to go looking for them either—they’re just there. Along the roads, in the woods, even tucked into little corners you’d walk past without thinking.

The bluebells are probably the most noticeable just now. There are loads of them, especially in the woods and along quieter tracks.

Some spots are almost completely covered, like a soft blue carpet under the trees. It’s the kind of thing you may not expect to see so much of, but on Mull it’s quite quite normal.

They thrive in the island’s damp, mild climate, appearing in woodlands and sheltered areas first, before spreading across open ground as the season progresses.

Walking through a bluebell wood feels almost otherworldly—the scent is faintly sweet, the colour immersive, and the quiet only broken by birdsong. It’s the kind of place where you instinctively slow down.

🤍 The Rare White Bluebell

One thing that stood out was a white bluebell. I’d never noticed one before, so it caught my eye straight away.

It was just sitting there among all the blue ones, nothing special around it, but it looked completely different. Turns out they do happen now and then, but it still felt like a bit of a lucky find.

There are also plenty of primroses about just now. You’ll see them along the roadside and on grassy banks, usually in little clusters.

They’re not as bold as the bluebells, but they brighten things up in a quieter way. Easy to miss, but once you notice them, they seem to be everywhere.

They favour damp, sheltered spots, and on Mull they appear in banks, woodlands, and roadside verges, often in generous clusters.

There’s something gentle about primroses. They don’t overwhelm the landscape; instead, they brighten it quietly, signalling that winter has truly passed. Their pale petals and golden centres feel like the first breath of spring.

🌿 Just a Nice Time to Be Out

Nothing too dramatic about it—it’s just a nice time of year to get outside. The flowers are out, everything’s starting to feel a bit more alive again, and even a short walk turns into something a bit more interesting.

And if you happen to spot something unusual, like that white bluebell, it just makes it all the better.
