This week we celebrated a special birthday dinner in Tobermory, Isle of Mull with a trip to one of our favourite nearby restaurants, Am Birlinn near Dervaig. It was Karen’s birthday, and the perfect excuse to enjoy a relaxed evening out after a beautiful drive from the campsite in the crisp spring sunshine.

Am Birlinn has just reopened for the season, with chef Liam back for another summer. It’s a proper restaurant rather than pub-style dining, but still feels welcoming and unpretentious—exactly what you want for a memorable birthday dinner on the Isle of Mull.

One of the things we love most is their focus on local produce. Much of the food comes from the family farm, alongside ingredients sourced from other small businesses across the island. We’re incredibly lucky here on Mull to have such high-quality produce and talented chefs who make the most of it. We were so busy enjoying the food that we forgot to take photos, so you’ll have to imagine the dishes—but here’s a friendly wave from a local instead!

As we head into the start of a busy season, it felt like a good moment to make the most of a couple of evenings out. Last night we also stopped by the Tobermory Hotel for drinks and enjoyed live music from Jamie Adamson, who had the whole place dancing. It was mostly locals, all making the most of a relaxed night before the summer rush begins.

Two nights out in one week is quite the treat for us—now we’ll be ready to focus on the season ahead until things quieten down again in September.
